SOMERSET DESERVES REGULAR TRAINS (15/01/02)

Wednesday, January 15, 2002

CONSERVATIVE County Councillors call on First Great Western to look again at the vital rail service to Taunton. For example, the new timetable issued last week has shown that the important Golden Hind 8.19 a.m. train now leaves 4 minutes earlier and arrives later at Paddington. Moreover, the Reading stop has been taken out altogether.

‘Taunton is suffering a deterioration of service by stealth. We have the oldest rolling stock in the system, gaps in service around the middle of the day and restricted service on Saturday evenings - whilst the cost of rail transport escalates.’ Said Mike Facey, the Conservative Environment and Transport spokesman.

As Taunton has now been designated a Principal Urban Area, it is essential that the rail service is not allowed to deteriorate unchallenged. Good communication links are vital to encouraging investment and business in the area.

Conservative County Councillor, Elaine Waymouth comments, ‘Efficient, frequent rail links, especially to London will be a key factor in persuading employers to chose Taunton and Somerset.’

The Conservative leader, Councillor John Smeaton says, ‘I regret any reduction in service. It is essential for the economy of the whole of the South-West that we are not further marginalized by poor transport infrastructures, as well as by the Government’s unfair financial provisions for the County.’
