Lib Dems on the fence on nuclear

Somerset County Council approved a proposal this week to engage in talks about nuclear expansion at Hinkley Point. Most people will support them in this. But the only trouble is that the Liberal Democrat administration at County Hall has a policy of non-proliferation of nuclear power. So how do they square that circle? Are they for or against?

Quizzed at the Council Meeting yesterday, the Lib Dems looked embarrassed and soft shoe shuffled on the issue. One Lib Dem councillor tried to get them to be open and honest about the Liberal Democrat view, but to no avail.

Conservative opposition spokesman John Edney said, ‘The Liberal Democrats are well known for being anti-nuclear. How they can enter into discussions on nuclear expansion when their mind is already made up? It does not make sense.’

Conservative Group Leader, Ken Maddock said, ‘Energy prices are going through the roof. It is vital that we exploit all methods of energy production based on a sound analysis of the costs and benefits. It is a complete cop-out for Liberal Democrats to try to face both ways like this. Conservatives will support the expansion of nuclear power generation at Hinkley Point as part of a balanced energy strategy. It will help to ensure our energy supplies for generations to come. And it will also provide over five hundred jobs locally.’
