Support for the Territorial Army

At the Full Council Meeting on 23rd July, the Conservatives proposed a Motion in recognition of the centenary of the formation of the Territorial Army.

Proposing the motion, Conservative councillor Brigadier Christopher Wolverson, drew attention to the fact that over the past 100 years members of Somerset's Territorial Army had served the Crown and Nation through two world wars and more recently over 200 members had been on active service in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He said,' Having started my military service in the Territorial Army I had the privilege of commanding a Territorial Brigade in the South West of England as my last appointment. I have first hand experience of this voluntary level of commitment, dedication and courage, which sets an example to us all. It is very right that we acknowledge the contribution these soldiers have made over the years and indeed are still making to the defence interests of the United Kingdom.'

Conservative Councillor John Edwards, seconded the Motion. John followed in his father’s footsteps, joining the Somerset Light Infantry in 1945 and served in Palestine. On return to the UK, he established a Territorial Army platoon in Minehead.
