School Reprieve
Hemington School given a last minute reprieve.
The Lib Dem Administration at Somerset County Council wanted to close the popular village school at Hemington. They said it does not pay its way. But local activists protested at the closure and the way it was being handled. They could not accept that a much loved local school with an official Ofsted rating of ‘Good’ should be closed. And with the support of their local Conservative County Councillor, Matthew Ellis, they have now won a reprieve. They now have another year to meet the Council’s requirements.
After the decision, Councillor Ellis said ‘I am glad that our argument won the day. Hemington is a good school providing an excellent education for its pupils. Its vital place in the local community was recognised. It has a bright future fully supported by the village. We now have a year to identify the way forward to ensure that our children get the very best start in life’.
