AXE THE LIBERAL DEMOCRATS! - Letter (06/01/05)
I am surprised but pleased that the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Wells has dared to raise again the subject of council tax in Somerset*.
It is the Liberal Democrat controlled County Council which has raised council tax by 79% in the last seven years!
It is the Liberal Democrat controlled County Council which has abandoned a savings target of £5 million per year they set only two years ago!
It is the Liberal Democrat controlled County Council which has borrowed £20 million to pay for road maintenance over the next five years!
And it is the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Wells who is trying to create yet another smokescreen by contemplating council tax levels in 2007/08 when those for 2005/06 & 2006/07 have not yet been set!
She needs the smokescreen to mask the rise of 79% in the last seven years and to divert attention away from their discredited ‘Axe the Tax’ campaign. Whilst she may support this campaign to replace the council tax with a so-called local income tax, I wonder if she knows that, on 18th March 2004, the Scottish Liberal Democrats voted against such a proposition!
The Liberal Democrats are adept in finding others to blame for their financial incompetence. The only thing they seem to know about money is how to spend it – as long as it is someone else’s.
Instead of ‘Axe the Tax’, I say ‘Axe the Liberal Democrats!
Yours sincerely,
Robert Little
Conservative County Councillor, County Hall, Taunton
